Merano, Italy) is a sound artist and researcher working with open-source sound transmission technologies in environmental research as unique tools for alternative ‘live’ models of listening, responding to, and composing with more-than-human environments. Her solo and collaborative works span activist radio labs, cryospheric sound transmissions, whip cracking performances and experimental cello concerts. Recorded and ‘live’ events explore the relationship to sound and listening, often engaging environmental recording, voices, instrumentation, film, radio and most notably ecological live audio transmission methods. Winner of an Oram Award in 2022, Lia was the founding producer of Silver Road, a drained water tank for time-based art practices in South-East London. She has developed works for Tate Modern/Britain (UK), Biennale Gherdeina (IT), Zone2Source Gallery (NL), South London Gallery (UK), Arnolfini (UK), V&amp;A Dundee (UK), Messner Mountain Museum (IT), Q-02 (BE), BBC Radio 3,&nbsp;British School of Rome (IT), and&nbsp; Sunaparanta Goa Centre for the Arts (IN). She is currently an AHRC/Techne-funded PhD candidate at the Centre for GeoHumanities Royal Holloway, University of London. How does it feel to become ecological witnesses to our rapidly shifting landscapes? You are listening to a live audio broadcast from the “End of the World” glacier in Northern Italy’s Stelvio National Park. The solar-powered listening station, installed at ca. 2.600 metres above sea level on the Ortles mountain, has been transmitting since July 2025. This stream is a living archive of the glacier’s cyclical sonic and material life, allowing us to witness meltwater rhythms, torrential sediment flows carving the ice, avalanches, animal life and the seasonal impacts of wind and weather stroking the microphones, in real time. The live composition creates a portal between “here” and “there”, connecting us, as listeners, to more-than-human environments as they unfold over time. It is an act of remote presence, attuning us to the accelerating transformations of our planet through sound, technology and listening. In ‘live audio streaming’, microphones are embedded in places semi-permanently; they transmit sound continuously from one location to many possible listeners over the internet. Through these ‘streamers’, it is possible to tune-in to the dawn chorus in Kolkata or a thunderous storm in the Dolomite Mountains in real-time. For some, live audio streaming is a symptom of the digital shift toward streaming everything. For others, it transforms the act of ‘listening to’ into ‘listening with’ environments, furthering an ethical reorientation to more-than-human life on a shared planet, and expanding geographic borders. Despite the ‘sonic turn’ in the environmental and geohumanities, this shift in listening is vastly underexplored, yet it holds significant and urgent potential for our capacities to attune to a planet in an era of climate crisis. From dried-out basins to charred forests, my sonic journey delves into the haunted histories of the land of the Cathars in southern France, culminating in the ancient monastery of Lagrasse, where colonies of bats seek refuge. ‘Guano Spells’ is a collection of ultrasonic incantations - the very fertilizer of renewal - casting a spell for the hopeful return and proliferation of bat and animal populations amidst the challenges they face. We are in the Parc Naturel Corbières-Fenouillèdes, where a colony of rhinolophus bats is finding refuge behind a vast historic open fire chimney stack in the historic Abbaye de Lagrasse (7th Century). Deepest thanks to John Holliday for his guidance and open mindedness towards our artistic endeavor.&nbsp; John is in charge of the observation and protection of the bat colony and nature park. In the coming months, John and I will build and install an ultrasonic live audio stream that will sonify the soundscape of the bat colony in real-time. This live audio stream will allow everyone to tune in to the nocturnal chattering and listen with and be with the rhinolophus bats. Emitting high-frequency calls, bats listen keenly for the echoes bouncing back from objects in their path. This sophisticated sonar system allows them to navigate intricate environments, hunt for prey, and avoid obstacles in the blink of an eye. At the heart of echolocation lies the Doppler shift phenomenon, a fascinating aspect of physics harnessed by bats to gauge the speed and direction of their prey. As a bat approaches its target, the frequency of its emitted calls compresses, creating a higher-pitched sound. Conversely, as it moves away, the frequency stretches, resulting in a lower pitch. This Doppler shift provides crucial information about the prey's movement, enabling the bat to adjust its trajectory with remarkable accuracy. But amidst their remarkable abilities, bats face a grim reality. In Europe, bats serve as vital indicators of biodiversity, yet they face alarming declines. In the southern reaches of France, where 31 out of 33 bat species reside, habitat degradation and human disturbance pose existential threats. Species like the Mediterranean horseshoe bat, Long-fingered bat, and Schreiber's bat are particularly imperiled by urbanization, cave disturbance, and intensive agricultural practices. The urgency to protect these creatures is underscored by a lack of scientific understanding and public awareness of their ecological needs. The decline of water sources and insect populations, exacerbated by factors like climate change and habitat destruction, threatens their very existence. As water bodies dry up and insect populations dwindle, bats struggle to find sustenance, leading to declines in their populations. This ecological imbalance highlights the interconnectedness of species and the urgent need for conservation efforts to safeguard these vital creatures and the ecosystems they inhabit. Remote microphones broadcast in real-time from multiple locations enabling us to listen together through a custom-made outdoor PA system in the Garden Theatre. This temporary network of live audio streams amplifies and connects us to not-so-distant natural and urban sites in Bristol and further afield. During the Radio Art Lab, we invited participants to think about and play with how signals are transmitted and received in the human and the more-than-human world, exploring radio art, sound art, eco-acoustics, theremins, detoxifying gardens, subversive streaming, pond dipping, weather instruments and listening together. Between March 2023 - December 2024, (hydro)Files consisted of a network of 8 live audio transmitters that continuously broadcast the real-time soundscape from various sites above and below the waterways of Amsterdam. 8 (open air) stereo microphones and (underwater) hydrophones transmitted sound continously from surface, drinking and sewage waters. Streaming from inside the cavity space of a bascule bridge, inside a public lido and the amstel&nbsp;canals, outisde a historic water pumping station, dangling of temporary cycling bridge, and transmitting from Rotterdam port and via solar power from the sand dunes outside Amsterdam.&nbsp; Amsterdam has an incredibly long history in water management and a deep going relationship with its waters. One third of the Netherlands is below sea level and most of its land is built on sand. River dikes prevent flooding from water flowing into the country by the major rivers Rhine and Meuse, while a complicated system of drainage ditches, canals, and pumping stations (historically: windmills) keep the low-lying parts dry for habitation and agriculture.&nbsp; In December 2022, I started a conversation with hydrological scientist Maarten Ouboter about 'giving the water a voice'. Together we located and researched important acoustic landmarks and nodes that reflect the diverse ecologles of the water networks In and around Amsterdam. hydroFiles is research-in-progress looking into the affordances and limitations of live audio streaming and making contributions to creative discourses on environmental sound. The work creates sound portals with live sound transmision boxes that were sent and set up in 3 Ukrainian cities: Kyiv, Kharkiv and Odesa.&nbsp; Project by: Timothy Maximenko in collaboration with Grant Smith from Soundcamp and&nbsp;Ben Parry. UPDATE: Due to the constantly changing political circumstances in Ukraine and power cuts, changing weather conditions, the sound streams cut out for longer periods.
