As a sound artist and performer Lia Mazzari’s practice is often collaborative, engaging new audiences through encounters with art in non-conventional spaces, physical and virtual. She likes to explore the divisions of site and non-site, private and public through live performance, sound installation and urban intervention. Lia creates recorded and live events that embrace the broader sense of sound in space. This fluid relationship with her environment and towards sonic activism as well as developing an extended technique with cello and whips form the crux of her practice.

Lia’s research encompasses intermediate activities ranging from curating to performing to composing and writing with sound, body and site; Thinking space through sound, she is interested how artistic practice is shaped by the architectures, geographies and communities we hear and place it in; and what the resonances between politics, acoustics, memories and publics are that constitute a given place. This practice was also developed during the production of Silver Road, an experimental performance space housed in a derelict steel water tank in South-East London, founded in 2016.

Silver Road is now run as a hybrid non-venue devoted to site-specific experimentation in time-based art practices and sonic interventions in the urbanscape. By using sound as a tool to investigate space, she has made a series of site-specific responses and sonic interventions, individually and collaboratively,  with live audiences in a variety of unused and inconspicuous locations around London and internationally.

Lia performed alongside Tarek Atoui, Ashley Paul, Takahiro Kawaguchi, Angharad Davies, Ilan Volkov, Christof Migone, David Toop, Sarah Davachi, Áine O’Dwyer, Maria Chavez and is part of Al Fresco, a new formation with artists Sholto Dobie and Tom White. Recent projects also include Decameron-19: dispatches from the isolated city and The Precarious Art Workers Choir.
